Jay Tamkin
Jay composed all the music & lyrics on his CDs, & doubles between guitar,Lapjack, keys & vocals.
First inspired to play guitar when listening to his dads Hendrix albums. On his eighth birthday, Jay had a sunburst squier Strat just like Buddy Holly!
Over the years, Jay has collected many guitars,a Parker Nightfly, an S.R.V. endorsed white Japanese Tokai Strat & plays on stage, his favourite of course-the white Fender American Standard Strat he uses to get that "full fat" blues sound through his Fender Blues Deville Amp.
Jay uses Fender Bullet, Ernie Ball strings & Stubby picks.
Jay has recently added BLACKSTAR HT STUDIO 20 COMBO to his amp collection, he is loving the sound! I see GUITARIST magazine also has a good write-up on the same amp.
Music has given Jay many opportunities & experiences.
Jay has played in the USA, on two three week tours, from New York to Savannah in Georgia.
Jay was also the principal bass player for six years with the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra, during which time he performed for H.M. The Queen, on her golden jubilee, & travelled throughout Europe, meeting & playing with Jools Holland's band members Pete Long & Dennis Rollins plus many jazz greats - Stan Sultzman,Bill Waltrous, Ben Clatworthy to name a few, inc playing at the South Bank Theatre,London.
Rik - uses Korg, Hammond & Roland
instruments.
Nicks Kit - Sonor Phonic Drums -
22" Bass
13" Rack
16" Floor
18" Floor
Ancient Premier Hi-Fi or Royal Ace COB Snare Drum, Tama Iron Cobra Pedals-more fragile than you might think,(appears to be made of fallapartium)to be replaced with Sonor.
Nick uses Zildjian & Sabian Cymbals.
Roc & Soc Stool ( The Most Important Thing!)
Regal Tip 2B sticks
Incidentally, Nicks drum kit was used on Michael Hutchence solo album
Jays signed to a German label, & the band played a great support to Spooky Tooth in Europe to sold out shows, with Spooky Tooth members Mike Kellie & Mike Harrison said of Jay "that he reminded them of a young Steve Winwood & had what it took"nice one guys!
After recording the 12 track CD 'SORTED' in Fulda Germany last June, the new CD is was officially released 4th May.
An excerpt from the CD write-up...
"'SORTED' is an exhilarating musical journey that admirably lives up to its title.Comprising 12 imaginative tracks full of musical twists and turns, here is an album that is routed in the powerful rock - blues tradition but is never constricted by it.
And while Jay Tamkin explores trademark 12 bar blues and impressive power shuffles, he thinks nothing of striking out with a mix of lilting funk, acoustic instrumental gypsy jazz, unexpected Latino flourishes and enough strong melody lines topped by fluid guitargrooves to satisfy most musical palettes."
